Raya Underwater Art Museum: A Symphony of Art and Conservation Beneath the Waves

In a visionary leap for marine conservation and creative artistry, the Raya Underwater Art Museum is poised to become a transformative destination near Koh Racha Yai, Phuket. This pioneering initiative, blending cultural storytelling with ecological restoration, showcases Thailand’s commitment to preserving its underwater world.

The museum takes inspiration from Thailand’s revered epic, the Ramayana (Ramakien). Sculptures of iconic characters like Hanuman will rise from the seabed, acting as artificial coral reefs that nurture marine life. Created using innovative, eco-friendly materials developed by SCG, these sculptures will contribute to coral restoration while offering divers an awe-inspiring underwater experience.

Spanning an impressive one rai (1,600 square meters), the museum is a collaboration led by Thai artist Prof. Chalermchai Khositphiphat and contemporary art experts. Its development aligns with Phuket’s “ART-iS Fiesta” and Thailand Biennale 2025, establishing the island as an international hub for art and marine conservation. The first sculpture, a depiction of Hanuman, will debut in April 2025, marking the beginning of this monumental venture.

The Raya Underwater Art Museum is more than an artistic endeavor—it’s a collective mission. Government agencies, Rotary International, the Phuket Art Association, and other partners are uniting under the banner of “The Magic of Save the Underwater World.” Together, they aim to address the impacts of marine tourism while celebrating the synergy between human creativity and natural ecosystems.

This initiative redefines the boundaries of art, showcasing its potential to inspire ecological stewardship. For visitors and locals alike, the museum promises to be a unique blend of storytelling, conservation, and underwater exploration.
