Koh Khai and the cat crew

A good day by the sea.

Clear water, soft skies, and an island full of cats.

Too many cats to count.

The morning sky opened wide before the day even began. Warm sunlight shimmered across the water, and a gentle sea breeze brushed past as if inviting me to step into a day filled with calm and clarity. I boarded the boat with a heart that simply wanted to rest, letting everything drift away with the waves on this beautifully bright day.

As the boat pulled away from the shore, the soft rhythm of the waves tapping against the hull slowly eased my mind. It felt as though every worry I carried was being left behind on land, and the sea was quietly opening its arms to welcome me into a new, gentle day.

Koh Khai Nok

Glass-clear water and sand so bright it makes you squint.

The first stop was Khai Nok, where the water was so clear I could see the sandy bottom several meters below. It looked like someone had poured clean water over the sand and let the sunlight dance freely on the surface. The white sand was soft and powdery, contrasting beautifully with the bright blue sea.

I stepped into the water slowly, the coolness brushing my feet like a soft greeting. Tiny fish swam past as if saying hello, and everything felt simple, quiet, and unexpectedly comforting.

Koh Khai Nui

Snorkeling in a world full of tiny, colorful life.

Next was Khai Nui, a snorkeling spot known for its clear water and lively schools of fish. I floated on the surface, looking down into a world that felt like a living painting—silver fish gliding past, soft-colored corals stretching gently beneath me, and the water so still it felt like glass.

The sound of my breathing through the snorkel mixed with the soft hush of the waves, creating a peaceful moment where it felt like the whole world had narrowed down to just me and the sea.

Koh Khai Nai

Cat Island, Where the cats are the real locals.

The final stop was Khai Nai, better known as Cat Island—a place where cats roam freely, nap under the trees, and greet visitors with the kind of calm confidence only true island residents have.

The moment I stepped off the boat, several cats wandered over. Some stretched lazily in the sun, some walked up with curious eyes, and others simply sat nearby as if keeping me company. Their fur was warm from the sunlight, and their gentle presence made the island feel even softer and more welcoming.

I sat on the sand, and one cat came to sit right beside me, rubbing its head lightly against my arm as if saying, “Stay a little longer.” With the sound of the waves, the warm breeze, and a cat quietly curled next to me, the moment felt like a small gift the island had placed gently in my hands.

Khai Nai wasn’t just beautiful—it was charming in a way only an island full of friendly cats could be.

Heading back

A sky that didn’t want the day to end.

On the way back to Phuket, the afternoon sun cast soft golden sparkles across the water, as if saying a gentle goodbye. I looked back at the Khai Islands—at the clear water, the bright sand, and the cats still lounging near the shore—and felt a quiet certainty rise in my chest:

I’ll be back again.
