how i match my vanda to the right light so the leaves stay strong and the roots keep growing

the sunlight vanda actually wants
vanda is a true sun orchid.
it doesn’t just “tolerate” sun, it wakes up from it.
when the light is right, the leaves feel firm, the roots push new tips, and the plant grows fast.
how i read the leaves
the leaves tell me exactly how much sun my vanda is getting.
- bright green
means the light is okay but could be stronger. - medium green with a slight yellow tone
this is perfect. this is the “happy vanda” color. - yellow patches
too much direct afternoon sun. - dark green
not enough light. vanda will slow down.
morning sun vs afternoon sun
morning sun
soft, warm, perfect for vanda.
i let mine get as much morning sun as possible.
afternoon sun
strong and sharp.
i avoid direct afternoon sun because it can burn the leaves.
if i can’t avoid it, i use partial shade or place the plant where the sun hits only for a short time.
how i place my vanda at home
i keep my vanda in a spot with
- morning sun
- bright light all day
- airflow
- no harsh afternoon heat
balcony spots work best for me.
side walls with morning sun also work well.
how i know my vanda needs more light
- leaves turn dark green
- roots stop pushing new tips
- the plant feels slow
- no new leaves for a long time
when i see this, i move the plant slightly closer to the sun.
how i prevent leaf burn
- i avoid direct afternoon sun
- i keep airflow strong
- i water in the morning so the plant stays hydrated
- i shift the plant slowly, not suddenly, into stronger light
sunlight + watering
sunlight and watering always work together.
more sun = faster drying roots = more watering
less sun = slower drying roots = less watering

my quick sunlight checks
every day i look at
- leaf color
- leaf temperature
- root tips
- how fast the roots dry
these tiny checks help me adjust the light without guessing.
