the day my garden felt different
the day it arrived
a small orchid that felt bigger than its size
my cattleya had no flower yet, so i knew i had to grow it first to see what kind of bloom it would have. i picked it up from the shop with just the pot in my hands, no plastic bag, no wrapping, just the plant itself. the canes were thick, the leaves wide, the roots strong, everything showing that it was ready to grow.
once i got it home, i removed half of the old medium so the plant could breathe, keeping the stable part of the root zone untouched. i added rock instead, something clean, airy, and easy to dry. cattleya roots prefer space, airflow, and a medium that does not stay wet for long.
learning its light

cattleyas need bright light to grow well. medium green leaves mean the plant is okay but could use more brightness. darker green means not enough light. yellowish green means too much.
i realized something simple, cattleya leaves are more beautiful to me than dendrobium leaves. dendrobiums have big clean leaves that look good even without flowers, but cattleya leaves feel stronger, wider, and more defined. they look like a plant that knows how to grow. even before blooming, the leaves already show the character of the plant.

cattleya roots are thick and silver when dry, green when wet. they need fast drying and good airflow. rock works well because it does not break down, does not stay wet, and keeps the pot open.
i checked the roots before watering. if the pot felt heavy, i waited. if the pot felt light, i watered. cattleya watering is simple, it is about letting the medium dry completely before the next drink. wet medium for too long slows growth and causes rot.
