Arriving in Atami
easy steps from the station to the first blossoms
Atami is one of Japan’s most convenient coastal towns. You can ride the Shinkansen with a JR Pass, get off at Atami Station, and within just a few steps you’re already surrounded by early cherry blossoms.
These are Atami Sakura — a special variety named after the town itself, known for blooming before almost every other sakura in Japan. They appear in late winter, soft pink petals glowing against the cool air, as if the town welcomes you with flowers before you even reach the sea.
Following the flowers
from the river to the coastline
Walk down from the station, and the blossoms guide your path. Some trees bloom in front of local houses, some line the river, and others appear near the beach where the sea breeze mixes with the scent of early petals.
Atami is a hillside town, so the walk includes slopes and stairways. You go down easily, but the return trip means climbing back up. It’s a little tiring, but the distance isn’t long and the views make every step worth it.
The combination of pink flowers, blue water, and bright winter sunlight creates a gentle, unforgettable mood.
Atami Sakura and Kiku Sakura
two early blooms sharing the same season
While Atami Sakura is the highlight, you may also find Kiku Sakura blooming early. Its petals are fuller and rounder, a different shade of pink, a different softness.
Two varieties, two personalities, both appearing before spring officially begins.
A seaside treat
fresh fruit soft cream and shokupan
Atami is also a lovely place to enjoy a Japanese fruit sandwich — a simple, refreshing snack made with:
- fresh seasonal fruits
- light whipped cream
- soft Japanese milk bread known as shokupan
It’s gentle, sweet, and perfect for a warm walk by the sea.
A coastal day shaped by early blossoms
sunlight flowers and the sound of waves
Atami is known for its beaches, its easy access, and its warm coastal air. But in late winter, the early sakura become the heart of the town.
Soft pink petals, strong sunlight, cool sea wind, and a hillside path that leads you from the station to the shore.
A simple, beautiful day by the Atami coast where winter and spring meet in the color of flowers.
